N5892T pictured here at Rainy Pass began life on 24 November 1964. She is an older Cessna 185 powered by a 260 horsepower Continental IO-470. She was delivered with floats from the factory directly to Alaska for service. Most of her 5400+ hours were flown in guide service, first at Chugiak, then Kenai and Anchorage before her life of leisure at Birchwood airport. 92T is on her sixth owner who flies her only for recreation and Iditarod support. Fitted with skis she has an empty weight of 1950 pounds, giving her a useful load of 1250 pounds. She has seats for pilot plus three passengers; however she prefers dogs and cargo. Last year she was at Weight Watchers and shed pounds by discarding older radios and her old lead acid battery. She navigates by GPS, roads, and Visual Omni directional Range. This year she is on Schneider wheel penetration skis and has an extended baggage hold so she will be more versatile, and possibly be able to fly all the way to Nome. Maybe a new dress next year!
